The most exciting film of the summer has now received its second official trailer.
“Margot Robbie plays the adored figurine that comes to life in the Mattel doll franchise adaptation “Barbie.” Ken is played by Ryan Gosling, but there are several versions of both Ken and Barbie in the large ensemble cast.
The Kens consist of:
- Simu Liu
- Kingsley Ben-Adir
- John Cena
The Barbie collection includes:
- Emma Mackey
- Nicola Coughlan
- Kate McKinnon
- Hari Nef (a transwoman)
The movie’s first teaser trailer gave viewers a glimpse inside the candy-colored universe that Greta Gerwig, the director and co-writer, created.
The recently released second trailer gives us a more thorough look at the movie, its characters, and its wink-wink comedic tone without giving much away about the plot.
What is still lacking? any impression that the movie has a strong Culture War message. However, preliminary test results indicate that this “Barbie” is all about that.
In response to that screening, World of Reel published two anonymous comments. Both imply that the trailers have a lot to cover up:
Despite the general spiky and outrageous comedy (there’s even a chase scene! ), it manages to be lightheartedly political without being overly so, and it also manages to be surprisingly heartfelt. Applause was due to America Ferrara’s monologue about the discrimination that women experience.
The essence of woke storytelling is when a lecture is crammed into a scenario to make a point.
fiercely feminist and eruptively incoherent. So vibrant and colourful. they’re fantastic, and they’ll win Oscars for costume and design. Since this is Gerwig, there’s a large heart in the centre. It deconstructs the feminist imagery of Barbie and recontextualizes her for a new generation. Barbie is portrayed by Margot with a Valley accent, agency, and questions about her place in Barbieland as she spars with Ken over patriarchy.
Some of the actors aren’t subtle about the movie’s goals. Will Ferrell, Gerwig’s co-star, told the Wall Street Journal that the movie is more than just a toy tie-in.
“It’s a love respect to the brand and, at the same time, couldn’t be more sarcastic – simply a fantastic remark on male patriarchy and women in society, as well as why Barbie is criticised but every little girl still wants to play with Barbie. Boy, I thought that was wonderful when I read it.
This excerpt from W Magazine emphasises how the movie will be full of “empowerment” in addition to Gosling’s renowned abs.
Robbie plays The Barbie, and Dua Lipa plays Mermaid Barbie with vivid blue hair while she composes the soundtrack. Ritu Arya is Barbie with a Pulitzer, Issa Rae is Barbie with the Presidency, and Emma Mackey is Barbie with the Nobel Prize. Barbie the doctor is played by Hari Nef, Barbie the lawyer by Sharon Rooney, and Barbie the diplomat is played by Ana Cruz Kayne and Nicola Coughlan, respectively. Author Alexandra Shipp is well-known Barbie
The different Kens, meanwhile, are just Kens.
Additionally, Gerwig’s feminist credentials are evident from her recent directing work, including 2019’s “Little Women,” and several press appearances.
Because of the focus that groups like Time’s Up have given to the dearth of female filmmakers, she claims that there is currently a great deal of interest to hire female directors. “I think it’s really important to put pressure on studios to hire women and producers to support female directed and written films until it’s 50/50,” she said.
Why then haven’t these issues been addressed in the marketing campaign to thus point?
It’s easy.
Wiser doesn’t sell, as marketers are well aware. Even though Hollywood suits might claim the expression “get woke, go broke” never crossed their minds, marketing experts are more aware of this.
Hollywood is beginning to realise how detrimental being woke may be to its business line.
The allegedly progressive “Batgirl” movie was axed by Warner Bros. Discovery before it even reached HBO Max subscribers. Only one season of the woke “Willow” remake was available on Disney+. Once viewers tasted its virtue signalling, the woke “Lord of the Rings” series on Amazon Prime saw its ratings plunge.
Despite the woke mob’s wrath towards J.K. Rowling, the creator of the Potter universe, a new “Harry Potter” TV series is in the works.
Late last year, Netflix shelved two woke ideas, one of which came from Meghan Markle.
Even the Oscars dropped a lot of their woke messaging last month and saw a little increase in ratings.
Gerwig and Warner Bros. want to spread the word about the supposed lessons taught in the movie, but they are aware that doing so at this point in the promotional cycle may be disastrous.
The 2016 “Ghostbusters” reboot gained notoriety early on for having woke plastered all over it, and the movie never really recovered.
The marketing geniuses behind “Barbie” have taken note of this lesson, so the brand, the attractive stars, and the lighthearted nature of the movie will now be the main points of attention. Just know that the media will support Team “Barbie” in almost unison if it makes its woke message public.
The movie “Barbie” opens in theatres on July 21.
