Kelly Clarkson released two all-new songs after giving fans a sneak peek at the first track from her post-divorce album. The songs are about her breakup with Brandon Blackstock.
No divorce attorneys are required: With Chemistry, her next album, Kelly Clarkson was prepared to talk about what was “mine” in the first song while simultaneously addressing emotions in the second song, “me” (both songs were released at the same time). Chemistry, her most significant body of work since divorcing her now ex-husband, Brandon Blackstock, is referred to as her “divorce album” and is said to chronicle “the arc of an entire relationship.” Kelly, 40, began “mine,” a song she released on Friday (April 14), with the termination of a romantic relationship and the sensation of a broken heart.
On the opening tune, she crooned, “You know I question every motive, everything you say/Thought with you maybe my heart wasn’t meant to break/Can’t believe I let you in, I can’t believe I stayed/As long as I stayed, yeah.” She sings in the song, evidently hoping that karma will work itself out with her ex: “I hope one day someone will take your heart and hold it tight/Make you feel like you’re invincible deep inside/And right when you think that it’s perfect, they cross a line/And steal your shine like you did mine.”
She provided her audience with more details about her own married experience on “Me,” but she also asserts her individuality. She sang in the deeply intimate song, “Buried myself into somebody else/Shut out some parts of me, did it so casually/I guess I needed that to be able to step back/I lived my life without me, I never allowed me to,” She continues, “I don’t need somebody to hold me/Don’t need somebody to love me.”
In a March 26 Instagram video, Kelly declared, “The album is called Chemistry. It’s called Chemistry because I was trying to find a word that really represented the whole thing. It might also be one of the songs on the album. I didn’t want someone to think that I was only expressing one or two feelings, like, “I’m angry, I’m sad,” you know? This album is undoubtedly the story of a whole relationship, and a relationship as a whole shouldn’t be reduced to just one thing. There are, then, the good, the terrible, and the ugly aspects of it. Anyhow, chemistry could be a hot, chilly, or enjoyable thing. But it could not be good for you at all. That’s why I gave it the name Chemistry.

After almost seven years of marriage, Kelly, 46, and Brandon, 46, divorced in 2020. The two argued during the separation over who gets what and how to divide custody of their two children. Kelly attacked Brandon, her former manager, and his father at the end of March. Both are suing Kelly for allegedly unpaid commissions totaling $1.4 million (plus an additional $5.4 million in future commissions). Kelly has filed a countersuit, saying that Brandon and Narvel Blackstock never had the proper authorization to act as talent agents and that they owe her every penny they earned from her career.
When covering GAYLE’s “abcdefu,” Kelly changed the lyrics from “forget you and your mom” to “abcde forget you and your dad” and “the fact that you got half” and “my broken heart/turn that s—t into art.”
According to Kelly, “This is an important album,” she told Variety in September 2022. “I’m working on this in therapy: I sometimes find it difficult to express how I’m feeling, but music is useful to me. Just really healing, that’s all. I’ve had the album recorded for a while.
She said, “I hadn’t really been working hard on an album until I needed to. “The entire divorce process took place, and I needed to write it. After that, I wasn’t sure if I was going to let it out since you can get really upset in that mindset. There are all kinds of songs on the CD, and some of them undoubtedly cover the emotional spectrum. It almost resembles the progression of a relationship because the start is so lovely and charming before changing. And occasionally, it doesn’t develop in the way you want.
